Introduction

The department is a comprehensive academic curriculum program supported by the founder, Formosa Plastic Group (FPG), one of the largest enterprises in Taiwan.

The programs offer degrees from undergradate to doctor in Industrial Management and Business Administration.
The undergraduate program (Bachelor of Management, BM), established in 1994 and originally named Industrial Management, has about 50 enrollments each year. Undergraduate students acquire knowledge in management through in-class courses as well as spending a semester of “learning by doing” internship in FPG.

The Business School was named as the Graduate School of Management. It offered Master Programs (MA) and Master Credit Programs. The Executive Master Program of Business Administration–(EMBA) started since 2000. In the academic year of 2001, MBA programs were separated into Financial Management Group, Technology & Operations Management Group and General Management Group. Our Ph.D. programs started in 2003. The Department now offers the study programs from the undergraduate level to the Ph.D. level.

Starting from the academic year of 2004, MBA programs initiated the new Biotechnology Administration Group to closely leverage resources from the Chang Gung Hospital. In the academic year of 2005, EMBA further extended another Asia Pacific Business Administration Group. This cooperation with the faculty from the Chinese University of Hong Kong aims to expand administrative experiences across the strait and to recruit elites from the Asia Pacific region to join the learning process.

Curriculum Features

Business Administration is an applied science combining both theory and practice. Besides actively promoting interchange with the practical world, the department is collaborating with enterprises in the Formosa Plastics Group to provide undergraduates with work-study opportunities and half-year internships. Students also have the option of work-study and internships with businesses apart from the Formosa Plastics Group. Both the undergraduate department and graduate institute rely heavily on case study instruction, place particular attention on interdisciplinary research, and emphasize the integration of theory and practice.

In the undergraduate department, apart from basic courses on quantitative methods, information, and language, etc., students also take required courses on economics, statistics, accounting, and calculus. We encourage students to select a major from among the department’s four main programs: technology and operations management, financial management, operational management, and biotechnology management. We also encourage students to take a minor or study for a double degree.

In the graduate institute, each of the foregoing four programs independently recruits and admits students; this system allows each program to develop its own distinctive features. The research specialties of the current faculty provide a very representative cross section of the field of management. Our primary research directions include high-tech industry management, non-profit enterprise management, derivative financial products and financial innovation, e-commerce, industry analysis, etc.

We wish our undergraduate students to acquire the following qualities throughout the education process.

1.      Professionalism: To carry an excellent and well-balanced theoretical foundation, a good understanding of modern management skills, the ability of leading and communication, and particularly, team-based spirit and ethic.

2.      Globalism: To carry worldwide knowledge and be open minded, and particularly, to strengthen the command of international languages.

3.      Humanism: To carry appreciations of humanities and arts, and a mind to care for community, society and people.

4.      Strategic Thinking: To think about the problems and development aims between operation and management openly from political, economical, technical, cultural, environmental and other various aspects.
