The
department is a comprehensive academic curriculum program supported by the
founder, Formosa Plastic Group (FPG), one of the largest enterprises in Taiwan.
The programs offer degrees from undergradate to doctor in Industrial Management
and Business Administration.
The undergraduate program
(Bachelor of Management, BM), established in 1994 and originally named
Industrial Management, has about 50 enrollments each year. Undergraduate
students acquire knowledge in management through in-class courses as well as
spending a semester of “learning by doing” internship in FPG.
The Business School was named as the Graduate School of Management. It offered Master Programs (MA) and Master Credit Programs. The Executive Master Program of Business Administration–(EMBA) started since 2000. In the academic year of 2001, MBA programs were separated into Financial Management Group, Technology & Operations Management Group and General Management Group. Our Ph.D. programs started in 2003. The Department now offers the study programs from the undergraduate level to the Ph.D. level.
Starting from the academic year of 2004, MBA programs initiated the new Biotechnology Administration Group to closely leverage resources from the Chang Gung Hospital. In the academic year of 2005, EMBA further extended another Asia Pacific Business Administration Group. This cooperation with the faculty from the Chinese University of Hong Kong aims to expand administrative experiences across the strait and to recruit elites from the Asia Pacific region to join the learning process.
Business Administration is an applied science combining both theory and practice. Besides actively promoting interchange with the practical world, the department is collaborating with enterprises in the Formosa Plastics Group to provide undergraduates with work-study opportunities and half-year internships. Students also have the option of work-study and internships with businesses apart from the Formosa Plastics Group. Both the undergraduate department and graduate institute rely heavily on case study instruction, place particular attention on interdisciplinary research, and emphasize the integration of theory and practice.
In the undergraduate department, apart from basic courses on quantitative methods, information, and language, etc., students also take required courses on economics, statistics, accounting, and calculus. We encourage students to select a major from among the department’s four main programs: technology and operations management, financial management, operational management, and biotechnology management. We also encourage students to take a minor or study for a double degree.
In the graduate institute, each of the foregoing four programs independently recruits and admits students; this system allows each program to develop its own distinctive features. The research specialties of the current faculty provide a very representative cross section of the field of management. Our primary research directions include high-tech industry management, non-profit enterprise management, derivative financial products and financial innovation, e-commerce, industry analysis, etc.
We wish our undergraduate students to acquire the following qualities throughout the education process.
1. Professionalism: To carry an excellent and well-balanced theoretical foundation, a good understanding of modern management skills, the ability of leading and communication, and particularly, team-based spirit and ethic.
2. Globalism: To carry worldwide knowledge and be open minded, and particularly, to strengthen the command of international languages.
3. Humanism: To carry appreciations of humanities and arts, and a mind to care for community, society and people.
4. Strategic Thinking: To think about the problems and development aims between operation and management openly from political, economical, technical, cultural, environmental and other various aspects. This department/graduate institute currently consists of an undergraduate department, an MBA program, an EMBA program, and a doctoral program. All of these programs have currently admitted a full complement of students. We will increase students’ opportunities for interdisciplinary study, instill an international outlook, and impart excellent communication and expression skills, raising the competitiveness of our graduates. We will continue to improve the hardware and software equipment of our existing or planned finance, production management, biotechnology, marketing, industrial analysis, and human resources research rooms. In addition, we will also expand participation in industry-university cooperative research, strengthen academic interchange, and sign cooperation contracts with prominent domestic and foreign schools. We look forward to increasing research and instructional energy through the exchange of teachers and students.
Our aims are listed as follows. In order to assure and improve the quality of our teaching:
■ Focusing on the study and research in the core curriculums of “Financial and Banking Management Curriculums” and “Technology management of Biotechnology Industry”.
■ Promoting teaching through case studies of the successful experiences of Formosa Plastics Corp. (FPC) and other globalized domestic enterprises.

The Department and Graduate Institute of Business Administration have the most significant features. Not only an advanced educational promotion channel is provided, but also exchange channels of students for foreign universities and research corporations have been established. In addition, we are continuously seeking the on-job training programs for enterprises. A research center on Business Administration has also been setup in order to extend the research level.
All education will combine the theorems and practices. In addition to the deep research on theoretic study, both professors and students are encouraged to join the practices in enterprise operations.
There are several areas we are put much attention on:
▲ High-technology management
▲ Production and supply chain management
▲ Industry analysis
▲ Knowledge management and customer relationship management
▲ Non-profitable business management
In order to pursue the leading role in managerial area, we have to put much emphasis on teaching research and faculty. In teaching, we have to guide the students to learn and acquire the content of current business administration. In research, we will get corporations from FPG and other enterprises to provide long-term research projects.
To the promotion of faculty, we want to look for famous professors or experts to join this department. So far, we are adopting two directions to extend the number of faculty. A top-down strategy is adopted that the famous professors or experts will be recommended by the University committee to the department. A bottom-up strategy is another approach that much effort on advertisements is applied to search fresh Ph.D. Both new faculties would have an extra payment. In addition to looking for the full-time faculty, famous professors or experts will also be hired to hold part-time teaching or join research projects. Both professors and students can also be influenced to be capable of international viewpoints.
